It’s our nation’s birthday and surely you’ll be celebrating in some way today like I plan on it. Chances are you’re going to have to go from day to night, so items like these will not only help you through that transition, but they can be worn throughout the season.
STYLIST TIP: I got a text from a friend the other day asking if she should purchase a pair of American flag sneakers—to which I replied “NO.” Avoid buying items you may only wear one day of the year (like that “Kiss me I’m Irish” shirt you may break out every St. Patty’s day) and invest in pieces that you can wear all season long and still be festive in.
Elizabeth & James blazer (Loehmann’s) / Gap sweater / BDG jeans (similar) / Vince Camuto shoes (TJMaxx) / Cambridge Satchel Company bag / Urban Outfitters Scarf and sunnies / H&M enamel cuff / etc… watchband cuff / belt and all other jewelry, vintage.
It’s hard to worry about my own style when I’m so focused on the styling projects I’m working on. Sometimes I would love to walk out in sweatpants, but I never have—not even in college, unless I was getting hazed in my sorority—and never will. A worn in, loose fitting pair of jeans is the next best thing.
STYLIST TIP: If you’re going to go for a relaxed look like a boyfriend jean, polish it up with more tailored pieces like a blazer and a sexy bootie. Then you’ll be ready for your errands or even drinks with friends.
BEAUTY SECRET: (Look! It’s a 2-fer!) So, if you want a cool quick bun updo like mine, but you have thin hair that doesn’t give you a beautiful bump like this, you’re in luck! You can achieve this look with a hair donut like ones I’ve spotted hair stylists everywhere now carrying in their kits.
OR my cheap and easy cop-out solution:
1- Take an old sock (preferably clean) and cut off the foot part.
2- Pull hair into high ponytail secured with a clear elastic.
3- Then taking the rest of the sock, put it around the ends of your hair and roll the hair until it covers the sock and reaches the base of your hair.
4- Secure with u-shaped pins and voila! Effortless good hair day.
Kanvas top (from Something Else, similar online) / Free People jeans / Toms shoes / H&M cuff / etc… watchband bracelets / Alex and Ani bangles / Gypsy Nation vintage bag / Nona E. Rose belt / Urban Outfitters sunnies / vintage necklace, rings and earrings
This spring is all about the prints like tropical motifs, florals and even birds. Don’t be surprised if you see this taking flight on the streets—and I don’t mean the pigeons about to hit you.
Sparrow sweater (Anthropologie) / Leifsdottir top (similar) / Zara pants (similar) / Urban Outfitters vintage belt / vintage bag / DV by Dolce Vita shoes / Ray-Ban sunnies / etc… necklace and bracelet
Can you believe it’s only April? While the West Coasters are dressed for Coachella (I’m jealous!), we’re just starting to prepare for summer here on the other side of the country. Luckily I just made the switchover in my closet and broke out my warm weather gear. The sweaters are officially stored away!
This early spring cleaning forced me to dig out my old clothing that I have worn in the past couple of seasons and finally got them ready to either donate or consign. For those that are new to the consigning idea, it’s the best way to see if you can make $$ off of your designer pieces, while donating the rest.
This season, I’m working with Leftover Luxuries to sell my pieces like a pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs shoes that I sadly realized that they were just too small on me after I wore them once and a vintage Versace top that I bought years ago for a photoshoot with 90’s fashions and haven’t figured out what to do with it. Contact my friend Kim there if you are in the same boat as I am or stop by on April 27th – May 6th to pick up designer pieces like mine at a low price.
BCBG blazer, Jessica Simpson pants (both TJMaxx); TopShop top (similar); vintage Bill Blass scarf, belt and gold bangle; Urban Outfitters sunnies; H&M white enamel bangle; Stephan & Co bangle (Loehmann’s); etc… watchband bracelets; Cambridge Satchel bag (color sold out, but similar online); Aldo shoes.
I’ve been channeling a bit of 60’s Jane Birkin lately in my style—not to mention her great hairstyle, complete with chic bangs. I love how she could take a classic casual look of a tee with jeans and make it her own.
It doesn’t get more classic casual than the Breton stripe tops, once reserved for fishermen, then debuted on a woman by Coco Chanel. Unlike Birkin, who probably would have paired it with some jeans, flats and a straw picnic style bag, I updated the classic look with some of the subtle pops of neon popping up—no pun intended—this spring.
I’m sure next year it will return in my closet in some other transformation, which makes this classic style worth investing in.
Zara top (similar); Greylin pants (at TJMaxx, similar online); Kathryn Amberleigh shoes; E.Kammeyer headband (worn as necklace); Urban Outfitters sunnies; Cambridge Satchel Company bag; Alex & Ani charm bracelets; Shaya bangles; vintage earrings and rings.
Can you believe spring has arrived already? Not like we haven’t had an unusually warm winter, but I couldn’t believe I didn’t need even a light jacket on the first day of spring! Though, I’m continuing to take baby steps by adding pops of color to my usual wardrobe of lots of black.
It’s going to be a beautiful rest of the week for the shoots I’m working on. More to come…
Vintage cape (similar); Rag & Bone tux blazer (similar); Betsey Johnson sweater dress (similar); Sparkle and Fade tank bralette (Urban Outfitters, similar); Kate Spade tights; BCBG shoes; etc… watchband bracelets, cuff and ring; all other jewelry, vintage.
Every now and then, I love to add some old Hollywood glamour into my otherwise bohemian New York City lifestyle. Lately I’ve been channeling a bit of Brigitte Bardot meets Jane Birkin meets Stevie Nicks, as you can see on my Pinterest (hence the recent experimentation with bangs), but as the temperatures bizarrely are going up and up this week, I’m looking forward to not relying on my winter gear and getting more glammed up. Channeling the 40’s to a look instantly adds some chicness to your day.
Have a chic day!
