Halloween—Broke City Girl Style

Standard

My favorite “holiday” of the year is quickly approaching, and like always, I don’t want to spend money on a costume I’ll wear once. I tend to work with pieces I can find in my closet and supplement with additional things I can scavenge from Salvation Army, Beacon’s Closet, Trash & Vaudeville, or bargained on St. Marks Street in the East Village (the best place to get a cheap wig by the way).

Living in NYC, everyone tends to go all out on their costumes, so just when I think I’m getting too old for Halloween, I get suckered into coming up fabulous costume that beats a pre-packaged one any day. I guess it’s the stylist in me. Though growing up in the last recession, my mom would do the same.

So, if you’re like me and can’t bear another sexy this store bought costume that you’ll wear once. If you would rather come up with a creative character for the night that won’t break the bank, then you can totally pull of the same.

Here are some of my favorite costumes from the past few years that I’ve always thrown together last minute, but somehow successfully put together while staying within a tight budget.

2007 Amy Winehouse

2008 – Sid & Nancy

2009 – Rachel Zoe (Kids For Tomorrow Fundraiser Party)

2009 – Wayne & Garth from Wayne’s World

2011 – Zombie Bride & Groom

Stay tuned for this years’ creative and sensible costume. So far I’ve spent $0 on it and reused a wig!
